15 years later…

When I was 15, I went on a camping trip with my dad and my step mother. It was a big one, remote and in the bush. We were away for about 3 weeks and there were periods where we didn’t even have access to a shower or toilet.

This is my dads idea of fun. At 15 it certainly wasn’t mine and I blame him for my dislike of camping even now.

However, when we finally reached civilisation, somewhere out the back of Broken Hill, my life changed forever.

Now that sounds dramatic, and if you know me, you will know I *might* be prone to being a little dramatic, but this time it’s true!

Staying at that caravan park was future-Husband. He was there with mates on a schoolies type thing. We met at the pool and I spent the rest of my stay there trying to hide from my dad and sneak over to his camp site to drink beer and smoke cigarettes.

He was 18 and had a drivers license and a car. I thought he was the coolest thing ever. He thought he was the coolest thing ever too.

Turned out he was from a neighbouring country town to where I grew up. We knew some of the same people. It was fate – or so I thought at 15.

Dad eventually caught me out and dragged me home. I heard numerous lectures on how older boys were bad news. And older boys who smoke and drank… well, they were the devils work.

I arrived home to find he had sent me flowers.

Sorry Dad, but an older boy who sends me flowers? No lecture was going to prevent this one!

Years later, at the tender age of 22 and 25, much to everyone’s surprise (ours included!) he met me at the end of the aisle and we said ‘I do’.

Next week it will have been 8 years since we got married and later this year it will be 15 years since we started ‘dating’.

I can hardly believe it, but I have almost been with husband now for longer than I have been without him.

Someone said to me the other day I was lucky to have found my husband so young, saved me all those years of heartache. I don’t know about that, we have had plenty of heartache.

Maybe it’s more that I feel blessed to have found someone that I can share my heartaches with, learn from and grow together.

Happy anniversary husband. Here’s to many more.

  1. What a gorgeous story. Thanks for sharing. I always love hearing how people met and it is amazing how people step into your path and how little we can understand at that moment about the impact they’re going to have in our lives. I met my husband 11 years ago growing up in the countryside, rehearsing a community theatre show. I was 16 and he was 20. Against the odds, we said I do last year. Hope you celebrate the anniversary of your chance meeting! What a blessing it was 🙂

    • Thanks Vicki. I love hearing stories similar to ours, that young fate meeting and then against the odds sticking it out. Thanks for sharing 🙂

And yes, we do celebrate every August!

  2. Happy anniversary Mr and Mrs Bugg! I adored hearing the story of your meeting and thank goodness your Dad didn’t succeed in keeping you away from the evil, older boys! 😉 Congrats on so many years together – I’m raising my virtual champers to say ‘cheers and here’s to the next fifteen’ xxx

    • Thanks Carmen! Counting blessing helps remind me of how far we’ve come and not to forget the hard times. Silly I know – but makes me so much more grateful for the now. xx

  4. 🙂 Being good mates makes a big difference to being good mates.

…. see how I used the aussie meaning and the traditional meaning of mates there, to be all tricky confusing word play like.
