Another birthday done

Another birthday done  Another year older, another birthday done. These things always stress me out, I don’t celebrate well. I’m not particularly  gracious, I don’t like the song and I don’t like everyone looking at me. Conversely and completely in line with my very contrary nature, I feel horribly disappointed when things don’t go as planned.

For the last few years, I’ve felt a crushing anxiety in the lead up to the day. I can’t explain it, but it’s there. Tears are usually shed before bedtime and even though I keep expectations low as a rule, they somehow manage to creep up around this time of year, only to be dashed. Stupidly.

Yet this year, there wasn’t any of that. I don’t know if it’s because I was working and just too busy to notice, or if it’s just a sign that we’re having a better year. Whatever. It wasn’t there.

Instead, a gorgeous work colleague made me cake the day before and we sat around and laughed inappropriately in the office, before escaping to a nearby pub for a quick drink and a few rounds of Cards Against Humanity. I was told that the game could have been made for me, and I have to agree.

Saturday came and I was met by a girlfriend to go on an adventure. We brunched, we checked out a design market and we laughed until our sides hurt at my ability to insult stall holders unintentionally. Note to self, apparently stools can be made out of cardboard and concrete planters are in.

Upon my arrival home, Poss and Husband had been shopping. New earrings in a little blue box and a bunny card, cuddles on the couch and stories of Poss’ Minecraft game filled the afternoon.

Dinner was with my parents, at one of those restaurants you book weeks in advance for. We didn’t, so had to suck up a 5.30pm reservation. It wasn’t too bad. The food was amazing, the cocktails were great and let’s be honest, it’s just an excuse to start drinking earlier.

I went to bed with no tears, no regrets, another year older. Probably not much wiser. But definitely more grey hair and I’m pretty sure that wrinkle that’s stretching across my forehead needs some sort of attention. But there was much gin, more love and many cuddles.

And if that’s the start of the new year ahead, then I’m more than ok with that.
