Well, it’s officially been more than twelve months since we moved and along with the few boxes still sitting unpacked in the garage, there are a few items of furniture we have done without as well. In an effort to downsize and in theory, upgrade, we decided to sell both our lounge suites before moving; along with our coffee table and a few other bits and pieces.
We arranged for the new couches to be here when we moved in, but decided against purchasing a coffee table right away. The space is a bit smaller and we wanted to buy something practical; and nicer than the dodgy old Ikea furniture we had since well before Poss was born.
I dreamt of styling it; like a grown up. Maybe some coffee table books? Or even a nice candle? Instead, we have been luxuriously living it up with a little red plastic Ikea table, complete with coloured Ikea chairs; because clearly that’s so much better – or you know, not.
Each night Poss sits down at it, squeezing her long legs underneath, and generally lifting it up off the floorboards; I have to say I am pleased we didn’t spend the money to buy a new one…
Between the food spilled (and sometimes spat), the playdough, the drawing, the glue and the craft activities I am now leaning towards replacing our fetching red one with a second hand one instead, just until she’s a bit older (or a bit less clumsy).
We have arranged for a new lounge room rug to arrive in the next few weeks (goodbye cold floorboards!), so I think it’s finally time to say goodbye to the red plastic table. I am stalking online classifieds sites like Quicksales to find one (I like the idea they are 100% Australian), but so far have not found quite what I’m looking for.
I don’t even know what I want, which makes it hard; something practical that will take a beating from the child, yet not be plastic. Or glass. I doesn’t help that I don’t even know if I want something square, rectangle or round. That’s one good thing about online classifieds and auctions sites – they have an extensive variety of second hand goods on offer. Or maybe that’s a bad thing
Clearly I am no interior designer, but all this choice is playing on my mind. I saw a friend post a pic of her new ‘coffee table’, which was actually a foot stool thing with a tray on top of it, and I kind of loved that too which just took me right back to where I started – so many options!
Tell me – what do you have? Do you do the coffee table thing? Or just forgo it altogether?
In the meantime I will continue to stalk the second hand online stores in a hope that something awesome jumps out at me…
