I am the first to admit it, craft does not float my boat. In fact, I actively discourage it. I’m *that* mother. When Poss accidentally let off a glitter cannon in our lounge room recently, it almost gave me heart palpitations. I’m not good with mess, I’ve even less tolerant of mess that can be avoided.

While I am partial to a bit of colouring in, playdough makes me nervous, glue gives me goosebumps, paint should be banned. Or at least saved for school, where children wear smocks, professionals oversee it all and I don’t have to worry about the couch or the rug.

I wasn’t always this way. Once upon a time there were complicated craft activities that involved trips to speciality stores and required 30 minutes of preparation, only for Poss to declare herself done after five minutes. Or lose her temper because it wasn’t exactly the way it was in the picture on the box. I learned to outsource to people who love it, and have the patience for such things.

So Christmas craft? That’s outside of my scope. We occasionally do some baking together, there have been years when we’ve decorated a wreath or done some sort of paper based activity, but we’re just as happy doing other things together at this time of year and we tend to stick to them instead.

Thankfully for Poss, she has lots of other people in her life who have far more patience than me and they’re happy to pick up the baton from where I’ve clearly dropped it and run.

When the mother in law arrived this week, I had the perfect craft opportunity waiting for her. Take the Beados and make some Christmas decorations. Beados are one of my least hated craft-like activities – their little balls, while annoying, are easily vacuumed and the storage packs it all comes in means tidying up is easy.

So they set to work. Working without a template, designing as they went, was a big step for Poss. She likes to do the pictures exactly as they’ve been laid out, right down to the individual ball, so she was operating without a net. And she did a fabulous job.

I may not like doing the actual craft, but I totally love the results of it. Together they made a cute little reindeer, a tree, a Santa hat, a bright pink present, a set of candy canes and some sparkly stars. She attempted an elf, but she wasn’t happy with the results, however I’m just thrilled she wanted to give it a go and didn’t lose it when it didn’t turn out the way she wanted.

We’ll use them to pop into the family Christmas cards to add a little extra festive cheer and a few may even end up on the tree. All up the activity took less than an hour, induced no tears (mine or hers) and was cleaned up in 10 minutes. Winning.

Tell me, are you a craft person? What is your favourite Christmas craft activity? Or better yet, tell me your favourite craft fail.

Let me know in the comments below and you’ll go into the draw to win a pack from Beados worth $45 so you can get your on Christmas craft on!

  1. My name is Gail and I also hate craft. I remember overhearing another mother say ‘playdoh? ugh, that’s why they go to kinder’. As a first time mum of a 6 month old I was judged this mother. Now? I’m with her. What’s kinder for if not for messy craft?

Colouring is fine. Anything that can’t be vacuumed? Not so much. Or that makes some ugly naff thing I’ll feel obliged to hang on my fridge.

Love to see pics of the Beados that poss made.

  2. With a vengeance. Don’t get me started on adults who craft. Or my reaction when something comes home covered in home destroying glitter. Playdough I can do. Paint once or twice a year. But those boxes of pom poms and icy pole sticks and glitter glue and mess mess mess – all without instructions, because it’s up to the child’s imagination (read, Mum has to come up with the ideas). Argggh!

I am a craft person, but knitting & crochet are of the non-mess variety.

I’m not a craft person when it comes to little people & glue & glitter & more glue. Did I mention the glue?

    Oh, the horror!!

  4. okay so I kind of Love Craft but when its for me !! ha ha , as in not the messy glue fest and glitter for the kids ! but more as in making things like earrings necklaces that type of thing !
Selfish I know but I figure thats why they go to kinder and school !!

  5. I like the look of these beados. I could get in on them I reckon.

I do love Chrissy craft but what I love most of all is that kinder is doing it most of it for me this year. Too busy but what we do like doing is just making old fashioned Christmas cards together. Glitter, sequins and all (sounds like a nightmare right?).

The Christmas craft starts in November here, and finishes late January 😉 Today the kids decorated some gingerbread trees left by our ElfOnTheShelf. Yesterday it was painted wrapping paper and tomorrow it’s felt decorations. Cannot. Get. Enough 😉

  7. Christmas craft success in my grace 3 classroom today! Empty, clear baubles were given to each child to decorate as they wished. Some poured paint and glitter inside, others stuffed theirs with secret messages, baby Pom poms and others decorated the outsides with googly eyes and posca pens. They are amazing and I am tickled pink (and quietly high fiving myself !)

  8. I am so NOT a crafter! My sister found all of these wonderful ideas on Pinterest that she wanted me to do for her baby shower decorations. Ummm, she should know I am not a crafter. Super glue, dollies, burlap and mason jars. Let’s just say her’s looked awesome!!
