Unreasonable hatred

Unreasonable hatred

Last week I wrote a post on my Facebook page about Poss not wanting to eat her peas, pushing them into her mouth under great protest one at a time. Pausing for a complete whine after each and every one. I was un-relenting. “Eat those peas” I shouted at her in the end, knowing full well she would spit them out given the chance.

I don’t understand it. I love peas. They are seriously one of my most favourite things ever. In fact, when I was pregnant with Poss, they were the one thing I craved. Edgell brand canned peas, straight from the can. Cold. Yum.

But it seems I’m likely in the minority. A heap of people came out in Poss’ defence and informed me that peas were in fact poison, and she was well within her rights to protest. I never knew there was such a hatred against these tasty green morsels.

I started thinking about all the things I don’t like. It’s not a short list. And I guess I have to admit there are a few things on there that I have an unreasonable hatred of, that rise above the general dislike I apply to many things.

These are a special group; they are the work of the devil and I won’t be convinced otherwise.

  • Coriander. Or Cilantro. Either way it’s awful. Don’t try to convince me that if I just eat it with the right thing I’d love it. I won’t and it’s a scientific fact.
  • Balloons. I can’t stand them, especially in the house (less so outside). Noisy, breath filled, sacks of plastic. Enough said. Ewww. The only good balloon is a popped balloon.
  • Avocados. Slimy and horrid. If someone instagrams a picture of themselves eating ‘smashed avo on sourdough’ I almost have to unfollow them immediately. You’ve been warned.
  • Wooden cutlery. Just typing that sends a shiver down my spine. I just can’t even explain it, but it makes my skin crawl. Ditto wooden ice-cream sticks. I would rather go without.
  • Rocket. Or rocquette, or apparently it’s also called arugula. Whatever it’s called, its awful. And restaurants who insist on using it in every single garnish and side salad should be shut down immediately.

And yes, I do eat Thai food, I also quite enjoy Mexican. I am aware that at least two of the foods I hate the most are common with these cuisines. What can I say, I’m a complicated person (who also is a pain to order food with).

What is on your list of unreasonable hatred?

  1. I love Edgell peas out of the can!!! Have you tried the tiny taters? My Summer staple! I hate carrots. I hate them cooked, I hate them raw. I do not like orange carrots. Apparently this is strange, as I am a vegetarian? Whatever, hate them.

But funny you mention eating them while pregnant. My mum lived on iced coffee and cheese sandwiches while expecting me. I hate coffee ( in fact anything coffee flavoured, )cheese and milk!

  5. Totally agree with you on the coriander front. I also hate capsicum. It is a pollutant and should not be allowed on a plate with other food.

  7. Totally with you on the wooden cutlery thing – it always reminds me of those sticks doctors use to look at your tonsils. No thankyou. I’ve only recently come around on avocado but it has to be at just the right texture for me to be okay with it! My unreasonable (well, I think it’s totally reasonable) is peanut butter. I’m fine with peanuts in things but peanut butter makes me feel ill. I won’t even go near my boyfriend when he’s eaten it!

  1. […] Tonight there was a letter addressed to me in the school bag. This always scares the crap out of me. We’ve had letters and notes from other parents before; it’s never been good news before. My heart raced a little as I pulled it out of the envelope and I braced myself for something unpleasant. Like when I have to eat rocket or kale. […]
