An afternoon with Gok

Wise words spoken by Gok Wan at a Target event I was at last week. It’s funny how sometimes a single phrase sticks out and stays with you, long after the words are uttered, and in many cases, probably forgotten by the speaker.

But somehow after hearing Gok speak passionately about women; the way they dress and how they deserve to feel as fabulous as they look, I get the sense that Gok meant every single word.

And when he spoke about how plus size girls and pregnant women should have as much access to great fashion, as the size 8 models standing next to him on the stage, it’s fair to say he probably won my heart.

It’s been a long time coming. I have written before how hard it can be as a bigger chick to find fashionable, well cut clothes, how I gravitate towards accessories and shoes and spend way too much money on shipping things in from overseas.

Small local brands are slowly coming along; there is definitely more choice than there used to be. Props to the fabulous fatshion bloggers out there leading the way in finding them and helping all the rest of us to discover them too.

But no-one wants to be the one that can’t find something to wear. To know that some shops are simply off limits, or that you need to spend a stupid amount of money on a one-season, badly cut item because there is no other option.

So to know that a man like Gok is pushing a local, high street, brand to look at these things, to take them seriously and do something about it. Well. This pleases me greatly.

Well done Gok (and Target), I will be watching with interest.
