It’s about the community

school fair, velvet lily, fete, flowers, french village flowers

After months of planning, stress and just plain hard work, yesterday was Poss’ school fair. It’s a big deal for the school, and an even bigger deal for those who have given up thousands of hours of work to make the day a success.

For us, as I am on the committee, it means a week of crazy as those last few precious planning days slip away too quickly, then two full days – bumping in and then on the day.

It’s a bit like a wedding, but with far more moving parts, egos and personalities – all trying to come together to make something magical, but then it’s over in the blink of an eye.

And just like a wedding, sometimes it doesn’t work. There are always a few people who are unable to maintain a level of civility that an adult should; letting their own sense of self-importance take over, taking others down in the process.

It’s disappointing to see, especially when it comes from people that should know better; but heartening to know that it was by far the minority.

The majority just gave. They gave their time, their knowledge and their support. They lifted trestle tables, dragged chairs and hung over 100 metres of bunting. They climbed on chairs and picked up rubbish. They served with a smile. They cooked, they baked, they made, and they designed. They planned, they prepped and then they delivered.

Each stall, and there was over 30, had something special, a team of parents, past parents, students and staff, dedicated to the school and prepared to make it a success.

It’s the community that comes with Poss’ school that makes it so special; it’s a wonderful thing and I couldn’t be more grateful for it. It gives us far more than I feel I can re-pay, taking us in and making us feel like a part of something bigger than our little family of three.

Personally, I would like to thank the wonderful team of people I was lucky enough to work with for this event; the other parents on the committee who gave so much of their time, the team at Velvet Lily who created a french themed wonderland and Andrew from 92 Degree who kept me in coffee all day.

My heartfelt thanks also go to my Husband, who at 9pm last night was still lifting trestle tables, in the dark and the rain and was able to joke about it.

Finally to Anne, Bernadette, Nicki, Berni, Peta and of course, the wonderful Pietrina – without whom the whole thing wouldn’t have had happened. Thank you ladies – you make a girl feel loved.
