At our old house, we had a giant cocoon swing that we had hung from our verandah roof. Poss would spend hours meandering away the time, snuggled with books and blankets, as she swung gently to and fro.
When we moved, we unfortunately didn’t have anywhere to install it, so it was relegated to the garage, left sadly to gather dust on it’s own.
We’ve been eyeing off something similar for a while, knowing that Poss was missing that quiet space and the cosy, calming sensory experience that the rocking chair provided. But without anywhere to attach it to, we were stuck. How to provide that same effect, but without the permanency?
Enter the egg chair. It has a stand, meaning it can be moved just about anywhere either indoors or outdoors, it swings, but not too much, and they all look super cosy. So far, so good.
So when the team at Super Amart got in touch and suggested we might like to check out the sale on their outdoor range, I was pretty excited when I saw the egg chair as part of the line up.
We picked it up on Sunday from the very helpful team at Super Amart in Nunawading, and it was set up on our back deck within about five minutes. And lets be clear, anything that only takes five minutes to set up is a win in my book. Poss was snuggling up in even quicker.
She spent most of the rest of the weekend there, reluctantly sharing the space with Poppy, who has also decided she quite likes the egg chair.
We’re hoping that on those days when it’s just too cold and wet (let’s be honest, we live in Melbourne and it’s winter – it’s going to happen) we’ll be able to bring it in and install it either in her bedroom or in the lounge to help with those long weekends stuck inside.
I’m not sure that the designers of the egg chair had kids on the spectrum in mind when they designed it. And it’s not something I would have thought of before either, but sometimes thinking slightly outside of the box a bit means we can find a way to meet the sensory need in a slightly different way.
What’s that saying? Necessity is the mother of invention? I’m taking it and running with it.
What have you re-purposed in your home to meet a need?

Weird, I was just thinking about a hanging chair for Mr T this very afternoon. It occurred to me today he loves the one at his little brother’s kinder and finds it immediately calming but i couldn’t figure out where we’d attach one to since we have no trees. Something with a stand would work though. Clearly this is a sign I need to go get one.
